In 18th-century colonial Paraguay, local-born administrative functionary Don Diego de Zama (Daniel Giménez Cacho) dutifully and pompously serves the will of the Spanish Empire and dreams of his advancement to a more prestigious post. Cunning coworkers and humbling fate, however, will assure that the better life he seeks stays out of his reach.
