Joseph Conrad's novel is the basis for this compelling tale set in 1914 and centering on Axel Heyst (Willem Dafoe), an exile living in the Dutch West Indies who falls for musician Alma (Irene Jacob). When Heyst learns that Alma is being sold to a hotel owner, he takes her to his isolated home, but the two are confronted by two thugs and their servant in search of Heyst's rumored fortune.
