Career-stalled NYC writer Billi Wang (Awkwafina) was trying (and failing) to deal with the news that her beloved grandmother (Zhao Shuzhen) in Changchun had terminal cancer. As her parents (Tzi Ma, Diana Lin) resolved to keep the matriarch in the dark about her health-and used the pretext of a cousin's wedding for a last goodbye from the extended family-Billi found herself torn between culturally-expected silence and her own guilt.
