2009 collection of new versions of songs from the immensely popular musical and motion picture. Written by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey and set in 1959 at the fictional Rydell High School, Grease was originally staged as Greased Lightning in Chicago. Producers who saw the show suggested expanding the original version, which was basically a play with incidental music, into a full blown musical and arranged for the show to open off Broadway in February 1972. Excellent reviews and brisk box office business saw the show quickly move to Broadway and it would go on to make a record setting 3388 performances. By the time it came off stage, a film version had further added to it's reputation. Hallmark.
