Maria Callas was an American-born Greek soprano and perhaps the best-known opera singer of the post-war-World War II period. She combined an impeccable bel canto technique with dramatic gifts, making her the most famous opera singer of the era. An extremely versatile singer, her repertoire ranged from classical operas, to the bel canto operas of Donizetti, Bellini, and Rossini, to Verdi, Puccini, and in her early career, the music dramas of Wagner. Callas made numerous appearances at the world's great houses: La Scala, the Opera Garnier, the Metropolitan Opera, the Dallas Opera, the Royal Opera House in London, Mexico's Palacio de las Bellas Artes, and the Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires. Callas spent her last years living largely in isolation in Paris, her last performance on stage was 5th July 1965 at Covent Garden. She died 16th September 1977, of a heart attack at the age of 53. This collection features some of her most notable recordings from Nabucco, Il trovatore, Aida, MacBeth, & La Traviata.
