In late-1910s Paris, dissolute, debilitated, and abusive artist Amedeo Modigliani (Gérard Philipe) found a font of inspiration and true affection when he fell into a liaison with much younger art student Jeanne Hébuterne (Anouk Aimée). The commercial recognition for his craft that he sought during the short remainder of his life, however, would prove tragically elusive.
