The book tells the story of General Johan August Suter and the amazing destiny of this Swiss General in exile, ruined by his madness for gold. A worldwide success for Cendrars, the book is translated in 25 languages and an adaptation was made in Hollywood in 1936 in a movie named "Suter's Gold."
