Isaiah Thomas - The Cantata in Early American Music

While the father of the European cantata tradition, J.S. Bach, died in 1750, late eighteenth-century American composers classified their compositions as 'cantatas' tentatively, even though they displayed all the requisite components. These choice movements from sacred musical works helped define the definition of the cantata in America.
