Merchant and Ivory's double-edged drama flashes back and forth between the present day and 1920s India, as a British woman (Julie Christie) explores the circumstances surrounding a scandalous romance involving her great aunt (Greta Scacchi) and a dashing royal (Shashi Kapoor) 60 years earlier, circumstances which seem to strangely mirror the choices challenging her own life.
