Conductor Antal Dorati and the Philharmonia Hungarica's complete Haydn Symphony cycle is one of grandest, most ambitious recording projects of the stereo era. Unique as well in such a mammoth project is how consistently excellent the performances are. Dorati and his Hungarian forces are famously stylish throughout, intuitively keen when altering rhythm and dynamics to heighten the swing, and never miss a joke. Though now over 30 years old, of the very few complete Haydn Symphony cycles available Dorati's remains the most satisfying and rewarding.
