There's gold in California, and greedy mine owners blast the state's majestic mountains with high-pressure power hoses to unleash the glittery wealth - even if the process may create rampaging floods on local farmlands. A Sweeping historical epic, Gold Is Where You Find It tells this true story of the 1870s through the lens of a romance between a mining engineer (George Brent) and a wealthy landowner's daughter (Olivia de Havilland). Director Michael Curtiz (Casablanca) shows a sure hand with spectacle, especially in the climactic scene depicting a massive dam explosion. The spectacle is intensified by the same three-strip Technicolor process that helped make the Adventures of Robin Hood and the Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex (both also directed by Curtiz) so memorable. The fine supporting cast includes Margaret Lindsay, Tim Holt, Sidney Toler, George Gabby Hayes and Claude Raines as de Havilland's implacable father.
