Equally comfortable on big beat ballads, rockers, country and R&B, he was a perennial chart presence during the '60s, amassing a sizable string of hits. His dramatic tenor voice, given to piercing climaxes, coupled with the talented composers he worked with (such as Burt Bacharach-Hal David, Gerry Goffin-Carole King, and Phil Spector), led to a wealth of catchy rock 'n' roll and pop gems that still sound fresh today.
