Sequels and Answer Discs first began to proliferate in the early 1950s, initially in the c&w?and r&b?markets, and proved sufficiently successful that within a couple of years, pop and r&r hits were also likewise being routinely spoofed and lampooned. This wildly eclectic 2-CD set presents 29 big hits from the 50s and early 60s, each followed by it's respective riposte. Some of these were merely humorous, throwaway cash-ins, (e. g. The Romeos, Jeri Lynne Fraser, Carole King, Jo) although several turned out to be great records - and often, big hits in their own right - e. g. The sides herein by Gene Chandler, The Chantels, Skeeter Davis, Ted Taylor, Betty Cody, Goldie Hill and Rufus Thomas. In some cases the original singers - e. g. Buddy Holly, The Bobbettes, the Hollywood Argyles/Gary Paxton - "answered" their own hits, although a great many came from unknown, obscure artists. Several of these little-known rarities - including Morecambe & Wise's unlikely 'We're The Guys' and Ben Colder (aka Sheb Wooley)'s spoof of Johnny Cash's doomfest 'Don't Take Your Guns To Town' - make their CD?debuts herein.
