The favorite activity of young wastrel Birdey Hilltop (Tadanori Yokoo) was shoplifting from a Shinjuku bookstore. Buttonholed and taken to the manager by feisty Umeko (Rie Yokoyama)-who didn't actually work there-the duo's decision to go on together as thieves and lovers places them in no end of bizarre adventures.
