One was hanging in Vatican kitchen with Tommy Victor and drinking Valhalla Java Coffee while writing down a verse of my lyrics to our song Buried Away for Tommy to sing on, then watching him perform the part while Zakk frequented the room with words of sarcastic encouragement. The next was a complete Spinal Tap moment as I walked into the Vatican to lay down vocal tracks with Adam Klumpp and find Zakk throwing down about 10 takes of the lead guitar on the song Space Music For Cave People. He was schooling Justin on playing a blues lead over the tune. Fucked up thing, both mine and Justin's iPhones were frozen in limbo uploading new IOS software (in a cell phone dead zone) in the hills of the infamous BLS compound, so none of this was documented at all, and worse yet, no thumbs up to use the boss's lead on the album, ha!! Track 1: Buried Away Buried Away is a tale of terror with a foot in the grave and an open eye into the abyss, kinda like a classic Horror-Sci-Fi burrito smothered in ROMERO sauce. Track 2: Light Ov The Voodoo Star Light Ov The Voodoo Star is a blatant tribute (lyrically) to one of my all time vocal heroes Lux Interior R.I.P. The title of the song is a lyric from the Cramps song Voodoo Idol off the album Psychedelic Jungle, hopefully his undead corpse is rollin' over in his grave! Track 3: Crowned by Fire The very first time me and Justin jammed together in the Summer of 2006, he broke out this heavy swampy blues metal riff and I immediately started singing this thing I'd written called Crowned by Fire. The lyrics were inspired by the classic science fiction movie The Illustrated Man based on short stories by Ray Bradbury. The riff and lyrics came together so organically we were both blown away. A month or so later we agreed this was the best name for the band. Track 4: Something In Her Blood I wanted to try my hand at a love song. Something In Her Blood is a mix of Roger Corman's adaptation of Poe's The Pit And The Pendulum and Danzig's Her Black Wings, at least that's what I was going for... Track 5: Space Music For Cave People Space Music For Cave People is a 2 fisted salute to what CBF stands for, keeping the music grounded and pure!! Like our forefathers Black Sabbath, Motorhead, AC/DC etc.., We are Crowned by Fire, and we play Rock'n'Roll!! Somehow this story spewed out of me under the influence of Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. I always dug the dawn of man intro scene, the secrets of the black monolith and the extraterrestrial eye monitoring the existence of mans life, purpose and function on earth and beyond... Track 6: Burnin' For You Drove to a CBF rehearsal cranking a BOC CD in my car, told Justin we should do a cover of Burnin' For You with heavy guitars and straight forward blues punk vocals. Seemed to work. . All of the vocals and most of the music on this track was recorded in Florence, Italy at Larione 10 Studios during the Prone To Destroy recordings in the winter of 2008. Crowned by Fire are a ferocious four piece hard rock/metal band from Los Angeles that have been relentlessly rocking American audiences since early 2006. Musically, the band is tight and punchy like Slayer, brutally loose like Black Flag, with enough early Sabbath doom riffs to bring down the house. The band is, John Fitterer on vocals, Justin Neil Manning on guitar, Chris Breedlove on bass, and Rocco Paolone on drums. Manning's music career began around the time he started guitar teching for Zakk Wylde, touring the world and working with greats such as George Lynch, Tommy Victor and Danzig. "I cut my teeth with guitar heroes. I didn't necessarily want to continue as a guitar tech, but I wanted to learn from the best," Manning explains. Manning and Wylde forged a personal friendship which lead to Wylde offering Crowned by Fire his newly completed studio to record their new album.
