Former Paris ganglord Noël Durieux (Yves Montand) just sought a quiet retirement with lovely wife Nicole (Catherine Deneuve) at his rural estate. That ended when a fatally shot old crony was brought there by unbalanced young sidekick Mickey (Gérard Depardieu)... and as the kid's continuing encroachment into their lives brings unwanted police attention, Durieux might have to lean back into old habits.
