It was a time of tumult and change in czarist Russia. Seventeen-year-old Peter III, the newly crowned Czar, spent his days playing with toy soldiers, beating his dogs, and forcing his wife, Catherine II, to dress in military garb and endure rigorous drills. Meanwhile, while not under the thumb of her idiotic husband, Catherine graced the countryside with beauty, intelligence and magnanimity, endearing the people to her larger-than-life soul. It would not be long before Peter's utter insanity would push the people, and Catherine, to plot against the brutal drunkard, ultimately giving rise to Russia's longest-reigning and last female Czar-Catherine the Great.
