Manuel Cardoso (1566-1650) was one of the most important composers of the golden age of Portuguese polyphony around the turn of the seventeenth century. But modern choirs have been surprisingly slow to explore the rich legacy of his compositions: this is the first recording of his Missa Secundi Toni, and the first of any of his works with brass consort, it's dark colors providing an effective contrast with the young voices of the Girton College Choir. Gareth Wilson studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and Edinburgh University and at the Royal Academy of Music in London. He became a Fellow there, and subsequently lecturer, in Academic Studies between 2000 and 2004. At the same time, he joined the Music Department at King's College London and, in 2012, was appointed an academic professor at the Royal College of Music. He works as a lecturer for the Royal College of Organists, works as a freelance choral conductor, is Director of Music at Christ Church, Chelsea, and is a composer.
