This vampire fantasy, directed by Mario Bava in his first solo effort and loosely based on an 1835 short story by Nikolai Gogol, made a horror goddess out of English actress Barbara Steele. Condemned in the 1600s as a witch and gruesomely executed, Katia Vajda (Steele) returns from the grave to massacre her family's survivors, including her look-alike descendant.
