Billy Liar

Directed by John Schlesinger, Billy Liar captures the interior world of it's protagonist with a precision that borders on uncomfortable. Tom Courtenay plays Billy Fisher as a man who retreats into fantasy not out of whimsy, but necessity. Julie Christie's presence offers a counterbalance, someone who exists firmly in reality. The film observes Billy with a mixture of sympathy and skepticism, never fully endorsing his escape.
