Initially trained as a violinist and pianist (the latter to such an extent he would actually record several albums), Ben Webster made his name as a tenor saxophonist, widely regarded as one of the most influential jazz proponents of the instrument. Whilst perhaps best known for his spell with Duke Ellington, Ben would later branch out and record a series of highly impressive albums under his own name, commencing with 1953's aptly titled King of the Tenors'. Soulville was originally released on Verve in 1957 and unites Ben with the Oscar Peterson Trio on a nine track journey, of which five of the tracks are ballads. And whilst the backing ensemble is undoubtedly first class, it is Ben's playing that holds the ear. Hallmark.
