It was 1945, and with his mother Hille (Laura Tonke) pregnant and his father off at war, 12-year-old Nanning (Jasper Billerbeck) was trying his best to acclimate to farming upon a tiny island off Germany's northernmost shore. After Hitler's fall, Hille fell into a postpartum funk-and Nanning's efforts to acquire once-staple foods to please her drive this compelling coming-of-ager.
