In the Moravian Karst of the 16th century, prosperous miller Mlynár Spálený (Vítezslav Vejrazka) had the misfortune to run afoul of local regent Valecský z Valce (Cestmír Randa). Valecský was all too quick to hold up his rival's success to the superstitious populace as the work of the devil... and to set a determined Inquisition priest (Miroslav Macháchek) on his trail.
