Baz Luhrmann's debut is a film that announces it's style immediately and never retreats from it. Paul Mercurio plays Scott Hastings as a dancer caught between discipline and expression, and the film frames that conflict as both personal and cultural. With vibrant color and heightened performances, Luhrmann transforms ballroom competition into something almost theatrical.
