In 1894, the repressed Hungarian noblewoman Countess Irma Sztáray (Sandra Hüller) was retained as lady-in-waiting to the vivacious Empress Elisabeth of Austria (Susanne Wolff). Though Irma grudgingly emerged from her shell through the impulsive and hedonistic Sisi's influence, their four years of companionship would come to the most stunning of ends.
