While on an Alpine vacation, stuffy Oxford professor Francis Ashby (Michael Palin) finds his cloistered existence challenged when he makes the fortuitous-and enjoyable-acquaintance of American Caroline Ward (Connie Booth) and her teenaged ward Elinor (Trini Alvarado). Back home, he finds his nomination for the college presidency jeopardized when both women show up-and are very much jockeying for his attentions.
