When the rowdiness of a pack of drunken cowhands from the neighboring town caused a constituent his life, Marshal Jared Maddox (Burt Lancaster) rode to confront their boss (Lee J. Cobb) and the sheriff in charge (Robert Ryan) and demand they be turned over. They'd learn all too soon that the determined Maddox wasn't to be assuaged or bought off.
