Based on Christa Winsloe's play "Gestern und Heute," which also inspired a 1931 film version, this bold West German drama depicts the travails that lonely orphan Manuela (Romy Schneider) faces when she's sent to a strict girls' boarding school, and the anguish she feels over her forbidden attraction to a sympathetic teacher (Lilli Palmer).
