Callously womanizing Spahi officer Lucien Bourrache (Jean Gabin) finally met himself when he encountered-and fell hard for-the beautiful Madeleine Courtois (Mireille Balin) in Cannes. Summarily dumped after having his cash gone through, he leaves his commission behind to pursue her to Paris and try and win her back, resulting in an inevitable destructive spiral for both.
