Angst by August: Zappa / Twist and Shout

In late-'50s Copenhagen, adolescents Bjørn (Adam Tønsberg) and Mulle (Morten Hoff) might regret befriending the privileged but angry Steen (Peter Reichhardt), who starts pulling them into shoplifting, vandalism, and other delinquent behavior. Director Bille August's early-career coming-of-ager "Zappa" (1983), adapted from a Bjarne Reuter novel, co-stars Ulrikke Juul Bondo. August returned to Reuter's prose for the early-'60s-set follow-up "Twist and Shout" (1984), as Bjørn (Tonsberg) and Kirsten (Bondo) find themselves in a romantic quadrangle with new girl Anna (Camilla Søeberg) and Bjorn's best friend Erik (Lars Simonsen). 3 1/2 hrs.
