The creation of Buddhist statues and temple paintings, which dates back to the Asuka period and has played an essential role in Japanese spiritual culture, has evolved over the years in a uniquely Japanese way. The various techniques and spatial compositions share commonalities with modern figurine design.

This figurine is of General Basara, one of the Twelve Heavenly Generals, who are attendants of Medicine Buddha. His particularly unusual appearance gave rise to the term "basara," which later came to refer to those who behave in an extravagant and eccentric manner. The Twelve Heavenly Generals were originally finished in brilliant colors known as "gokusaishiki," and this figurine captures the coloring of the time.
