Where's Julio? was formed in 1990 at Stanford University by six classmates: Nicholas Brown (sax), Tim Choy (keys), Joe Kraus (drums), Ryan McIntyre (guitar), Daniel Soto (bass) and Mark Wong-VanHaren (vocals). Where's Julio was an active party band / house band from 1990 - 1993 at Stanford. While the band played mostly covers, they did compose and perform their own music as well and recorded a six song EP during the summer of 1993 titled 'Palace of Gifts', a reference to the dumpster outside their public storage rehearsal facility in East Palo Alto that yielded many furnishings (including the purple stuffed wizard on the album cover) for their practice space. The band reunited for a few gigs in 1997 and 1998, including a brief set at guitarist Ryan McIntyre's wedding in 1997, a show in Los Angeles in 1998 and another in San Francisco at the legendary Fillmore for a benefit for the Electronic Frontier Foundation in June of 1998. The Los Angeles and San Francisco gigs came about because three of the members of Where's Julio? (Kraus, McIntyre, Wong-Van Haren) also happened to be co-founders of the early internet search engine / portal Excite.com.
