This daring, debut CD single is the first of more to come from singer/songwriter/arranger, Velez Moore. From background to lead vocals, her lush, rich voice captures listeners and their hearts. A musical storyteller from New York City, Velez brings the bacon home. Her gutsy delivery of this Soul classic is evidence of her musical roots in the traditions of jazz, blues and gospel. With performance credits spanning poetry/spoken word, theatre and dance, this multi-talented performer is etching her creative passion onto the musical soundscape. According to the singer, her rendition of 'Until You Come Back To Me (That's What I'm Gonna Do)' is part of the continuum of the R&B/Soul tradition. Velez admits that a remake of an Aretha Franklin chart-busting tune penned by Stevie Wonder is a bold move for an unknown vocalist, but she is quick to add that it is also one more step in her creative journey. Velez's musical credits include performance at some of New York City's renowned venues, outdoor festivals and Burlington, Vermont's Jazz Festival. Working with legendary musicians such as; Charlie Burnham, Ben Perowsky, Jordan McLean and Jerome Harris, has given the singer/songwriter an appetite to experiment and explore with a musical vocabulary that includes live instrumentation, electronics and, of course, vocalizations. Velez considers herself to be a 'rhythmist' first, and singer/songwriter second. 'Determining the rhythm or the feel of the song is key to the delivery of the other instruments', she says. She believes this to be true for her musical and poetic works. As a spoken word artist, Velez continues to perform her original works at places like the Bowery Poetry Club, Cornelia Street Cafe, and LaMaMa Etc., while two of her poems--about the 9/11 tragedy--can be read in the Brooklyn Arts Council's online archive. With a willingness to 'push the creative envelope', Velez enjoys collaborating with other singers, musicians, visual artists and choreographers, and looks forward to more work in this area. Stay tuned for her next 2 releases: a full-length CD of songs and an original spoken word CD. Peace & love!
