Review

Review Text For the 22nd in Jet Star's Riddim Rider series, dancehall producer Harvel "Gadaffi" Hart worked off the so-called "Old Pirate Riddim," which is in turn based on Bob Marley's nyahbinghi-tinged "Redemption Song," and the results are one of the better and more uplifting entries in the whole series. The rhythm itself, even without vocals, is full of brightness and a wordless, perceptible hope, an emotional tone that Luciano recognizes and nails perfectly on his "I Believe," the opening track here. Fellow dancehall veterans Capleton ("Bum Dem") and Sizzla ("Blaze the Fire") also both take turns over the rhythm, but the balance of the tracks are voiced by relative newcomers. The Luciano cut is a clear highlight, along with Mystic Man and Smoke's wise and conscious version of "Old Pirate" called "Money Can't Buy Life," but the whole sequence holds up, and the "Old Pirate" rhythm never, in spite of its name, gets old, even when it is repeated 20 times in a row. ~ Steve Leggett
