Review

Review Text Planet Electrica: Protection is a terrific two-disc compilation surveying the state of mainstream electronic music at the turn of the millennium. While edgy experimentalists like Aphex Twin, Autechre, or Mouse on Mars aren't here, the collection is loaded with major figures in drum'n'bass, electronica, trip-hop, and big-beat, as well as electronic-tinged pop songs from rockers U2 and singer-songwriter Beth Orton. There are stellar singles by the likes of Massive Attack, the Chemical Brothers, Underworld, L.T.J Bukem, Les Rythmes Digitales, Roni Size, and Fatboy Slim, to drop some of the biggest names, but nearly all of what's here is quite good, neatly and very effectively summarizing the biggest trends in the genre. ~ Steve Huey
