Review

Review Text Bubbles, Brazil & Bossa Nova is an installment in BMG's Entertaining Made Easy series. The disc is presented by perky celebrity chef Andrea Immer and features a booklet with recipes, entertaining tips and essays, and an enhanced portion with more recipes and how-to demos with Immer as well as some music. The mood of the music reflects that of the menu Immer has prepared; spicy but relaxed. The songs all come from the RCA catalog (mostly from more current releases) and feature ballads and mellow bossa nova sounds, many of which were written by Antonio Carlos Jobim. Paul Desmond is the lone artist to represent classic jazz; his two tracks here are taken from 1964's Bossa Antigua album. The rest of the tracks have a modern sheen and are split between vocal and instrumental tracks. On the vocal side the highlights are John Pizzarelli's clever bossa version of the Gershwins' "'S Wonderful" and Arto Lindsay's hip-hop/smooth jazz/bossa fusion track "Ligia." The instrumentals are less interesting, for the most part tending to sound too smooth and bland, though Larry Goldings does work up a sweat on his speedy take of "Só Danço Samba." It is hard to recommend this as a collection of Brazilian-influenced jazz; there are so many other compilations that easily trump this one. As one segment of the package, the music is passable. Besides, if the food tastes as good as it looks in the photos adorning the booklet, who cares what music is playing! ~ Tim Sendra
