Review

Review Text Blue Note: A Story of Jazz is a brief, single-disc overview of Blue Note's history as one of the most influential jazz labels ever. In that sense, the compilation is a fairly useless promotional tool, as it doesn't really illuminate why the label is so iconic. While it does contain some classic tracks, a large portion of the songs here are newer cuts by such contemporary artists as Eliane Elias and Norah Jones. Granted, you do get Horace Silver's hugely popular "Song for My Father" and John Coltrane's "Blue Train," but, oddly, you also get Chet Baker's original vocal version of "My Funny Valentine" -- a classic indeed, but one for a Pacific Jazz collection, not Blue Note. Yes, the labels are both owned by EMI, but c'mon now, corporate connections aside Pacific Jazz was a West Coast phenomenon while Blue Note was resolutely East Coast in origin. Listeners looking for an introductory overview of what made Blue Note great would be better served checking out Blue Note: A Story of Modern Jazz. ~ Matt Collar
