Review

Review Text For the fifth of six trad jazz CDs drawn from the archives of the BBC Jazz Club radio series, five different British groups are represented. Clarinetist Monty Sunshine (with a septet also featuring trumpeter Rod Mason) is in top form on four numbers. The lesser-known trombonist Graham Stewart (heading a band that includes trumpeter Alan Elsdon) performs four obscurities, including Luis Russell's "Song of the Swanee" and "Tears." Altoist Bruce Turner's sextet plays three swing tunes but never really explodes, and bassist Micky Ashman interprets three songs with a heated sextet (trumpeter Keith Smith is the main star). The final four performances are by trombonist Chris Barber's band in 1964, with trumpeter Ken Colyer sitting in for Pat Halcox. Fun music played by some underrated bands. ~ Scott Yanow
