Review

Review Text This two-CD set was put together after a series of benefit concerts held in the San Francisco Bay Area for the Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan (RAWA). Understandably, most of the artists featured here are based on the West Coast. The musical scope is very large but mostly focuses on left-field or downright experimental forms, along with some well-suited traditional music from and around Afghanistan. And some of these artists don't hesitate to give their contribution a sharp political meaning. The result is a thought-provoking compilation album that may very well expand your musical horizons. It takes more risks than most other albums of this type and does it with flair. Historical recordings bookend the set: Meena is the founder of RAWA and was assassinated. Merman Parvin fled Afghanistan, but her "Aeen-E Yaree Barja" was recorded before her exile. The other contributions range from political hip-hop to left-field electronica, sound collage, avant rock, and free improvisation. Highlights are numerous: D'Yara's beautiful medley of Eastern European folk tunes, "Sicily" by the too rarely heard Charming Hostess, 20 Minute Loop's avant rock anthem "Pilot Light," Folk This' take on Phil Ochs' seminal protest song "One More Parade," Deerhoof's indescribably odd "Bring Down the Nutritious Pigs," and My Country of Illusion's ambient groove "Gobi Dust Storm." Other contributors include the Thums, Blevin Blectum, Godspeed You Black Emperor! (a collage of speeches by George W. Bush), Miya Masaoka, and the Abstractions, among others. Most of the tracks are exclusive to this compilation and all proceeds benefit RAWA. ~ François Couture
