Synopsis

When Communists controlled Eastern Europe, handicapped people were often sequestered from mainstream society. Following the collapse of the Soviet regime, many countries have sought to integrate the disabled back into the fray. This beautifully-wrought documentary from Czech natives Miroslav Janek and Tonicka Jankova serves as a celebration of newfound freedom and of the determination and initiative of a group of blind children who attend a program designed to teach them photography. The school's mission is to teach these children independence and survival skills amongst the sighted. The children are photographed telling their stories to unseen interviewers while examples of their work is periodically shown. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi
