Review

Review Text This four-CD, three-hour compilation of extracts from interviews the Rolling Stones have given over the course of their career has some value for very serious fans of the band. But it'll be a hard slog to get through for most, for several reasons. First, quite a few (though not all) of the bits are in mediocre to poor sound quality that sometimes makes listening difficult, and very occasionally makes it hard to even decipher what's being said. Second, it's sequenced so that each disc is devoted to a separate decade (one for the 1960s, one for the 1970s, one for the 1980s, and one for the 1990s), and the fact is that the earlier part of their career was much more interesting than the latter part. In addition, some of the remarks are so brief or enigmatic that it's hard to make total sense of them, though the liner note booklet and periodic voice-over narration explain the basics of their context. Plus, few of the dates and sources of the audio clips are noted. If you have the devotion and the patience, the box does contain numerous first-hand observations about their music, their shows, their influences, their personnel changes, and (though not overemphasized) their legal and drug problems. There won't be too many big surprises for knowledgeable fans, however, though there are the odd exceptions like Bill Wyman talking about how some of the instrumentation Jack Nitzsche contributed to their early records was given made-up names in the credits, or Mick Jagger arrogantly asserting that Goats Head Soup is better than Exile on Main St. shortly after the former album's release. Also of some interest are occasional soundbites taken from news reports and interviews with people who've known the band, like Marianne Faithfull discussing how her relationship with Jagger affected her image, or Pat Andrews (with whom Brian Jones fathered a son prior to his rise to fame) talking about her flawed ex-paramour. ~ Richie Unterberger
