Review

Review Text Featuring a laundry list of progressive rock mainstays including Neil Morse, Mike Portnoy, and Pete Trewavas and delivering a brand of holiday cheer that's been finely tuned for prog lovers, the Prog World Orchestra add a little weirdness to some yuletide favorite on A Proggy Christmas. The band's shredded guitars and synth noodling transform holiday standards like "The Little Drummer Boy" and "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" into prog arrangements that add a little extra depth to what is likely to be the oddest collection of seasonal music you're likely to encounter. Standing out among an already strange selection is "Frankincense," a track that merges the odd couple of Edgar Winter's "Frankenstein" with "Deck the Halls," creating a Christmas jam that's festive and strangely muscular. Though prog and Christmas tunes are both genres that have the potential to send people running in the other direction, this is an album that fans of bands like Spock's Beard and Dream Theater could have a lot of fun with, and it'll definitely make for some essential holiday obscuro for years to come. ~ Gregory Heaney
