Review

Review Text Alison Krauss must have listened closely to Jeannie Kendall of the Kendalls. Just give Just Like Real People's "Mandolin Man" a spin and note the similarities. This 1979 album continued the Kendalls' hot streak with the hits "I Had a Lovely Time" and "Just Like Real People," which were departures from the Kendalls' preoccupation with cheating songs. It seems as though they made a conscious choice to avoid cheating songs this time around; the album's thread, if there is one, is love. "I Had a Lovely Time" is sung primarily by Jeannie and offers thanks to a lover for his prowess, and "Just Like Real People" is a hopeful song of romance that might have been inspired in its use of the phrase "real people" by the then-current television show of the same name. "Never My Love" was recycled as the flipside of the next album's single and became a "tag-along" hit. The Kendalls' harmonies are among the best in country music, and their prominent use of acoustic instruments gives them a more down-home sound than many of their slicker contemporaries. Just Like Real People is an uplifting album that spotlights the Kendalls' harmonies without descending into the honky tonk world of dysfunctional relationships. [Originally released in 1979, Richmond reissued the album on CD in 1999.] ~ Greg Adams
