Review

Review Text The Elgins are famous for two minor hits that should have achieved greater success: "Darling Baby" and "Heaven Must Have Sent You," both written and produced by Rock Hall of Famers Holland, Dozier and Holland. For the unaware, this is not a collection of their Motown recordings; these sides were waxed in the late '80s by Britisher Ian Levine. Give Levine credit for capturing the essence of the Elgins' sound, something he didn't do when he recorded the Miracles and the Contours, to name two. Johnny Dawson is the only original on board; the revamped Elgins are Jimmy Charles, Norman McLean, and Yvonne Vernee-Allen, who replaced Sandra Mallet (Edwards). The songs are some of Levine's best, especially "Souvenirs of Love," a groovy mover that Yvonne Vernee-Allen tears up, sounding a little like Betty Lavette. A nice remake of "Heaven Must Have Sent You" almost rivals the original. No remake of "Darling Baby," though; Levine recorded it with Sandra Edwards, the original lead on the song. ~ Andrew Hamilton
