Review

Review Text On their second album, Bobby Earl Davis and his compatriots in the Earl Brothers are just as depressed and downhearted as they were on their debut. There aren't as many drinkin' songs, pro or con, but hard luck, hard times, and heartless women are still vexing them. They pay passing mention of the booze and barrooms on "Hard Times & Heartbreaks" but the drink can't hide the scars on a wounded man's heart. Davis contributes a short banjo solo to complement the lead work of new mandolin player Larry Huges and John McKelvy's moaning lead vocal. Davis and McKelvy croon acidic harmonies on "Don't Play the Jukebox," a classic tune about how sad an old song can make you feel. Woman trouble is addressed on "Dreadful Day" which echoes an old-fashion Appalachian murder ballad with its tale of jealousy and obsession. The playing is minimal as McKelvy and Davis bemoan their fate with low, mournful harmonies. "Another Broken Hearted Fool" is a showcase for McKelvy's anguished vocal wailing; the guy sounds like he's been living on the edge for far too long. Huges' crying mandolin dances around the "Girl with the Long Black Hair," another woman with a troubled past intent on doing damage. "Too Many Women, Too Little Time" is a humorous ditty about a heartless cad that choogs along on the band's driving rhythms and the high harmonies of McKelvy and Davis. "Oh Deah Is Calling Me" ends the set by confronting the ultimate trouble. McKelvy and Davis lay down some churchy harmonies while Davis plays a haunting, minimal banjo line that complements the song's desolate message. ~ j. poet
