Review

Review Text Bill Carlisle's high-jumping antics and hopped-up hillbilly novelty music had all the fire of rock & roll in the days before such a thing existed. As a veteran performer with a discography stretching back to the '30s, Carlisle might have rested on his laurels in the '50s. Instead, he put together a crack ensemble with a bass singer, a girl singer, and Chet Atkins on guitar to flesh out a series of spectacular and commercially successful novelty recordings. He placed seven singles high on the charts in a three-year period, with the oft-covered "No Help Wanted" holding the number one spot for a solid month. Gonna Shake This Shack Tonight is an expanded reissue of a Bear Family LP from the '80s titled Busy Body Boogie and compiles all of Carlisle's chart hits from 1951-1954, as well as later recordings for RCA, Mercury, and Columbia that are closer to rock & roll. The straight country novelties through 1955 or so are almost uniformly excellent -- they are so explosive and fun, in fact, it's surprising that Bear Family waited so long to reissue them on CD. These cuts are as crazed and exciting as the better-remembered Maddox Brothers & Rose, with multi-part vocal arrangements, hot picking, and occasionally risqué lyrics. After 1955, Carlisle was perfectly comfortable adapting to rock & roll, but his efforts in that area are mixed. "Dumb Bunny" and "Air Brakes" are fine rockabilly sides, but others, such as "Tiny Space Man," are silly and insubstantial. Taken as a whole, however, Gonna Shake This Shack Tonight is one of the most essential hillbilly bop collections in Bear Family's catalog, with stunning sound quality and a booklet full of classic photos of wild Bill Carlisle on-stage jumping like a madman. ~ Greg Adams
