Synopsis

After the success of the Sgt. Peppers LP, the Beatles decided to hire a psychedelic bus, take a trip into the English countryside, and film the results, no matter how bizarre or boring. With a motley cast of characters, the group basically tramps about the landscape with occasional music cues to give the film a bit of flow. Though Magical Mystery Tour is an interesting document of the Beatles psychedelic period, its cinematic function is negligible. ~ John Bush, Rovi

Review

Review Text A relatively unspectacular DVD edition of Magical Mystery Tour, the notoriously weird Beatles vanity project that began as a feature film and ended as a television special. The DVD transfer is taken from the same master as the 1988 videocassette release, and is adequate, but no more than that, with less resolution than should have been possible. The quality of the transfer is a bit variable, indicating problems with the source material. The sound is acceptable. Extras are a bit thin on the ground in this edition -- some newsreel excerpts chronicling Beatles efforts, a brief production history, and trailers for other MPI Beatles releases. Not the most essential Beatles item, and the lackluster presentation makes it even less so. ~ Steven McDonald
