Review Text The debut record (aside from a limited 1999 self-release) from New York City's Surrey Lane suffers from too much attention to detail: it's overly earnest, over-enunciated, and over-rehearsed. Irish native Enda Keegan, in his role as lead singer and lyricist, alternates between the superficially cliché and the profound, yet sings everything as if it's a grand proclamation. His lack of subtlety detracts from the songs' impact, as does his slavish adherence to the sheet music for what note to hit and how long to hit it. Despite this, Long Way Home has a number of strong pop/rock songs, "Some Days" being a musical and lyrical standout, with the backing musicianship consistently competent and hinting of early U2 in places. Surrey Lane's Long Way Home holds up as a promising demo record, but is not mature enough to reward repeat listens. ~ Joseph McCombs
