Sammy Sosa is a true American success story -- born in the Dominican Republic, Sosa grew up poor in a single parent household (his father died when he was young), but he possessed a great passion and talent for baseball, and in 1989, a major league baseball team from the United States, the Texas Rangers, signed him to a contract to play ball in America. Sosa's first season wasn't much to write home about, and he was traded between several minor and major league teams before finding a home with the Chicago White Sox in 1993. With the White Sox, Sosa finally revealed himself as a powerhouse hitter; in 1998, he found himself in a home-run derby with Mark McGuire and broke Roger Marris's long-held record of 61 homers in a season, with Sosa finishing out the season with a stunning 66 home runs. Slammin' Sammy: The Sammy Sosa Story is an animated film for the entire family which examines how Sosa became one of the greatest players in baseball through hard-work, determination, and teamwork. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
