Review

Review Text When the books of '90s alternative rock history are written, charting high on the master list of "Really stupid things major labels did during the post-Nevermind feeding frenzy" will be the fact that Columbia Records not only signed Season to Risk, but released two of their albums, the self-titled 1992 debut and 1995's In a Perfect World. Not only did this Missouri-based band's music -- a grinding mixture of grunge sludge and feints toward noisy aggression that are neither particularly noisy nor particularly aggressive -- have pretty much nothing in the way of commercial potential, it's not even particularly good by the limited constraints of the group's chosen style. That said, the second album is a marked improvement over the first, with singer-guitarist Steve Tulipana taking over the songwriting single-handedly and producer Martin Bisi reining in the songs' tendency toward aimless plodding; still, it's strictly bush-league alt-rock with little of particular interest. Widespread public apathy led Columbia to bounce the band after this album, and a couple of years later, the indie Thick label got the rights to the band's first two albums and reissued them, with single sides as bonus tracks, as the double-disc 1992-1997, gathering five years of faceless mediocrity in one convenient package. ~ Stewart Mason
